2007 has almost come to the end but it seems it has started the other day. Many remarkable things happened in this year. 
It's difficult to name one. But above all I thought that this year will be a new beginning but Allah had other plans. So now it became a remarkable or unforgottable year for us. I don't know whether the decission was wrong or right. But I've learnt that we shouldn't skip/jump steps in the life path. Then there is every possiblity to get hurt. And sorrow is really painful or even sometimes it's difficult to carry for the rest of the life. It seemed that the year had a good start, but it was a fake.

"Life is what happens to you while you are making other plans"..........   

 

Sea beaches of Bangladesh

 Cox's bazar beach:

Cox's Bazar is one of the attractive tourist spots & the longest sandy sea beach in the world (approx. 120km long). Miles of golden sands, towering cliffs, surfing waves, rare conch shells, colorful pagodas, Buddhist temples & tribes, delightful seafood--this is Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh.

The warm shark free waters are good for bathing & swimming & while the sandy beaches offer opportunities for sun-bathing. The beauty of the setting-sun behind the waves of the sea is simply captivating.

 Inani beach:

Inani beach is famous for the rock & coral boulders; you will find big coral boulders in this beach. one can go Inani beach by jeep & it is really exotic to drive on the seashore.

Potenga beach:

Patenga beach is about 22 km. from Chittagong & is approachable by a motorable road. Patenga sea beach is one of the major attractions of Chittagong for the tourists.

 Parki beach:

Parki beach might be the next tourist attraction of Bangladesh, which is situated in Anwara thana under southern Chittagong region. The beach lies 16-17 km away from Chittagong city. As the beach is situated at the Karnafuli river channel, visitors can view both the Karnafuli river & the sea together.

St. Martin beach:

St. Martins Island is the most beautiful Coral Island where you will find live corals. Its only 30 km from Teknaf. This small coral island about 10km (6mi) southwest of the southern tip of the mainland is a tropical cliché, with beaches fringed with coconut palms and bountiful marine life. It’s possible to walk around the island in a day because it measures only 8 sq km (3 sq mi), shrinking to about 5 sq km (2 sq mi) during high tide.

 Kuakata beach:

Kuakata, locally known as Sagar Kannya (Daughter of the Sea) is a rare scenic beauty spot on the southernmost tip of Bangladesh. Kuakata is truly a virgin beach-a sanctuary for migratory winter birds, a series of coconut trees, sandy beach of blue Bay, a feast for the eye. Forest, boats plying in the Bay of Bengal with colorful sails, fishing, towering cliffs, surfing waves everything here touches every visitor's heart. The unique customs & costumes of the 'Rakhyne' tribal families & Buddhist Temple of about hundred years old indicate the ancient tradition & cultural heritage, which are objects of great pleasure, Kuakata is the place of pilgrimage of the Hindus & Buddhist communities. Innumerable devotees arrive here at the festival of 'Rush Purnima' & 'Maghi Purnima'.

Dr. Muhammad Yunus....won Nobel Peace Prize

 Muhammad Yunus was born in 28th June, 1940 in Chittagong. His father was a successful goldsmith who always encouraged his sons to seek higher education. But his biggest influence was his mother, Sufia Khatun, who always helped any poor that knocked on their door. This inspired him to commit himself to eradication of poverty. He is a Bangladeshi banker & economist. He is also famous for his successful application of microcredit; the extension of small loans. These loans are given to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. Yunus is also the founder of Grameen Bank. In 2006, Yunus and the bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, "for their efforts to create economic and social development from below." Yunus himself has received several other national & international honors. He is one of the founding members of Global Elders.

In 1974, Professor Muhammad Yunus, interviewed a woman in a village near Chittagong who made bamboo stools, & learnt that she had to borrow the equivalent of 15p to buy raw bamboo for each stool made. After repaying the middleman, sometimes at rates as high as 10% a week, she was left with a penny profit margin. Had she been able to borrow at more advantageous rates, she would have been able to amass an economic cushion and raise herself above subsistence level.

Realizing that there must be something terribly wrong with the economics he was teaching, Yunus took matters into his own hands, & from his own pocket lent the equivalent of ? 17 to 42 basket-weavers. He found that it was possible with this tiny amount not only to help them survive, but also to create the spark of personal initiative & enterprise necessary to pull themselves out of poverty.

Against the advice of banks & government, Yunus carried on giving out 'micro-loans', & in 1983 formed the Grameen Bank, meaning 'village bank' founded on principles of trust & solidarity. In Bangladesh today, Grameen has 1,084 branches, with 12,500 staff serving 2.1 million borrowers in 37,000 villages. On any working day Grameen collects an average of $1.5 million in weekly installments. Of the borrowers, 94% are women & over 98% of the loans are paid back, a recovery rate higher than any other banking system. Now Grameen methods are applied in projects in 58 countries, including the US, Canada, France, The Netherlands & Norway.

Coffee and the jar...

A word of advice from a Professor of Philosophy

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hrs in a day are not enough, remember the jar... & the coffee...

A professor stood before his philosophy class & had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large & empty jar & proceeded to fill it with Golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of Pebbles & poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of Sand & poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the Jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "YES."

The professor then produced two cups of Coffee from under the table & poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

"NOW," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognise that this jar represents YOUR LIFE. The golf balls are the important things, your family, your children, your faith, your health, your friends, & your favourite passions. The things that if everything else was lost & only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter. Your job, your house, & your car. The sand is everything else. The small stuff. If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time & energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your Partner out to dinner. There will always be time to clean the house & wash the car. Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented, the professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a Couple of cups of coffee with a friend...."

Eid Mubarak

Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam, an obligation that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by every muslim able to perform & who can afford to do so, & this is the largest annual pilgrimage in the world. The pilgrimage occurs from the 8th to the 12th day of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar.

"Hajj" means literally "to set out for a place". For a Muslim, that place is the Holy City of Makkah. Upon arrival in Mecca, the Hajji, performs a series of ritual. one of them is wearing Ihram, if they are not already wearing it upon their arrival, pilgrims put on ihram clothing, & then leave Mecca for the nearby town of Mina, where they spend the rest of the day.

On the first day of the Hajj, the 8th day of Dhul Hijjah {the 12th month}, the pilgrims perform their first;
Tawaf which means all the pilgrims entering the sacred mosque Masjid Al Haram walking in 7 times in a counter-clockwise direction around the Kaba, & kissing the Black Stone of each circuit.

Sa'i; after Tawaf, the pilgrims perform S'ai, running & walking 7 times back & forth between the hills of Safa & Marwah. As part of this ritual, the pilgrims also drink water from the Zamzam Well.

Arafat, the next morning, on the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, the pilgrims leave Mina for Mount Arafat. This is considered the highlight of the Hajj, as they stand in contemplative vigil, near a hill from which Muhammad (PBUH) gave his last sermon. Pilgrims must spend the afternoon within a defined area on the plain of Arafat until after sunset. If a pilgrim does not spend the afternoon on Arafat then their pilgrimage is considered invalid.

Muzdalifah as soon as the sun sets, the pilgrims leave Arafat for Muzdalifah, an area between Arafat and Mina, where 49 pebbles are gathered for the next day's ritual of the stoning of the Devil (Shaitan).

Ramy al-Jamarat, at Mina, the pilgrims perform Ramy al-Jamarat, throwing stones to signify their defiance of the Devil. This symbolizes the trials experienced by Abraham, as he wrestled with whether or not to sacrifice his son per God's demand. The Devil challenged him three times, and three times Abraham refused. Each pillar marks the location of one of these refusals. Each pilgrim must hit each pillar at least seven times.

Eid ul-Adha, after the Stoning of the Devil, an animal is sacrificed. This symbolizes God having mercy on Abraham, and replacing his son with a ram, which Abraham then sacrificed.

Tawaf az-Ziyarah, on this or the following day the pilgrims re-visit the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca for a tawaf called the Tawaf az-Ziyarah (or Tawaf al-Ifadah) which is an obligatory part of the Hajj. The night of the 10th is spent back at Mina.
On the afternoon of the 11th, pilgrims must again stone all three jamarat in Mina (seven pebbles per jamarat). The same ritual must be performed on the following day. Pilgrims must leave Mina for Mecca before sunset on the 12th. If they are unable to leave Mina before sunset, they must perform the stoning ritual again on the 13th before returning to Mecca.

Tawaf al-Wada, Finally, before leaving Mecca, pilgrims perform a farewell tawaf called the Tawaf al-Wada.

Journey to Medina, though it is not required as part of the Hajj, many pilgrims also travel to visit the city of Medina and the Mosque of the Prophet. Muhammad's tomb is enclosed by the mosque. Pilgrims may also visit the tomb of Muhammad's daughter, Fatimah.

 

Bijoy Dibash (victory day) for Bangladesh

16 Dec 1971 is the day when Pakistani Army were surrendered all its modern arms along with 92,000 soldiers at Suhrawardy Uddan in Dhaka. This day was named Bijoy Dibash (Victory Day) for "BANGLADESH". The day is observed with due solemnity and nationalistic fervour. The first ray of the morning is heralded with a 31 gun-salute. Floral wreaths are laid at the Jatiya Smriti Saudha (National Memorial Monument) at Savar near Dhaka in memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of the country.

Cyclone Sidr: Nov 15, 2007

 Cyclone Sidr is the 4th named storm of the '07 North Indian Ocean cyclone season. The storm formed in the central Bay of Bengal, & quickly strengthened to reach peak sustained winds of 215 km/h (135 mp/h), which would make it a Category-4 equivalent tropical cyclone on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. The storm eventually made landfall near Bangladesh on Nov 15 '07. The storm caused large-scale evacuations in Bangladesh. So far, 3,447 deaths have been blamed on the storm, with that number expected to rise.

The name 'SIDR' was contributed by Oman; it is an Arabic name of a tree belonging to the genus 'Ziziphus'. On 15th Nov the cyclone intensified to reach peak winds of 215 km/h (135 mph), & a peak of 250 km/h (155 mph). Sidr officially made landfall around 1700 UTC later that day, with sustained winds of 215 km/h (135 mph). It weakened quickly after landfall and the final advisories were issued early on Nov 16.

Coastal districts of Bangladesh faced heavy rainfall as an early impact of the cyclone. Dhaka & other parts of Bangladesh experienced drizzle & gusty winds. Total damages came close to $450 million. The damage in Bangladesh was extensive, including tin shacks flattened, houses & schools blown away & enormous tree damage. Some local officials have described the damage as being even worse than that from the 1991 cyclone. The entire cities of Patuakhali, Barguna & Jhalokati District were hit hard by the storm surge of over 5 meters (16 ft). About a quarter of the world heritage site 'Sundarbans' were damaged. Researchers said 'mangrove' forest Sundarban will take at least 40 years to recover itself from this catastrophe. Much of the capital city of Dhaka was also severely affected, as electricity & water service were cut & significant damage was reported there due to winds & flooding. The local agricultural industry was also devastated, as many rice crops - which have a Dec harvest - were lost.

South Koreans clone cats that glow in the dark: officials

SEOUL (AFP) - South Korean scientists have cloned cats by manipulating a fluorescent protein gene, a procedure which could help develop treatments for human genetic diseases, officials said Wednesday.

The cats were born in Jan and Feb. One was stillborn while two others grew to become adult Turkish Angoras, weighing 3.0 kg (6.6 lbs) and 3.5 kg.
